It is often portrayed as such…usually by outsiders or people that attended and did not like what they heard, sometimes by well intentioned members. A mental preoccupation/obsession with alcohol that continually brings me back to the point of drinking again no matter what convictions or resolution I had. A physical reaction to alcohol that pretty much ensures once I commence drinking I will continue with little or no control, whatever the consequences.

I would have had empathy for where the newcomer “was at in his recovery” as I had been there once too. As a result this guy put the newcomer down to alleviate his own sense of self, his low self esteem. The guy was probably in guilt too as he could been working on his recovery more. If we leave self pity to fester long enough it becomes depression, that is my experience anyway.

It’s all about finding the activities that bring you joy, help you cope with stress, and ultimately find a greater meaning and purpose in life. If you’re in addiction recovery (or you’re not) and you’re interested in tuning into your spiritual side, the above serve as great starting points. Due to the nature of frequent episodes of powerlessness over our behavior, attached to addiction and alcoholism, we often acted in a way we would never act in sobriety. We had limited control over behaviour at times due to intoxication and acted on occasion in a way that shames us today.

Our spiritual malady causes us to be restless, irritable, and discontented. Basically, the alcoholic, once they start they cannot control the amount they take.

We drink and set off the craving and the cycle of addiction starts all over again. The reason we cannot just quit is that our mind constantly has us believe that we can control and enjoy our drinking.

I cannot express how happy it has allowed my wife, family and friends to become. Hence his first day of sobriety is taken as the first day of AA, although the AA organisation as we know it today took longer to come in to being. Now at least I can see how I react and can take steps to deal with it. I relate to my fellow human beings when I am not in fear or shame. Nobody wants to be out of control, to be teetering on the verge of the next disaster, the next moving of home, the next calling of the police, the next swirling carousel of unmanageabiilty. When things had died down and calm restored I spent the evening not in my fear or shame but in empathy and compassion.

Keep in mind that this is separate from the physical craving. Even after someone is completely detoxed and has all alcohol or drugs removed from their body, they will still obsess about drinking or using. But when it comes to alcohol and drugs, there is no will power.

We are dedicated to providing you with valuable resources that educate and empower you to live better. First, we research extensively, referring to and referencing authoritative sources that provide additional value. In addition, we meet with our clinical experts to better understand and gather information about a topic before and while writing. Still, others look to their personal interests—such as art, exercise, or even their career—for personal fulfillment and purpose. These individuals throw themselves into their beloved activities and achieve a greater sense of happiness in doing so. Find meaning in exploring and connecting to nature, which can also make one feel small—in a positive way that improves self-awareness and understanding.

From a spiritual stand point I can see the sense in these passages as applied to me. It took complete honesty to reach that conclusion, and a certain amount of humiliation spiritual malady meaning at the hands of John Barleycorn. These terms might seem strange, mystical, or outdated. Perhaps they seem in conflict with providing competent medical care.
